Clubfoot found during pregnancy

An unexpected scan finding can bring many questions. You can use this time to understand what was seen, speak with your care team and prepare for the assessment after birth.

Expectant parents share a quiet conversation at home.

What the scan can tell you

Ultrasound may suggest clubfoot from the position of the feet. A suspected finding on a scan is not always confirmed after birth. A clinical examination after your baby is born confirms the diagnosis and helps the team plan treatment.

Discuss the whole scan

Ask whether the foot finding appears on its own or alongside other findings. Your pregnancy care team can explain whether further scans, specialist discussion or other tests would be useful in your situation, and why. An ultrasound cannot identify every condition or settle the whole treatment plan.

Prepare for after birth

  • Ask who will assess your baby's feet after birth and how the referral will be arranged.
  • Keep copies of the scan reports and write down the questions you want to discuss.
  • If travel, cost or reaching a specialist is difficult, raise this while planning care.

Questions for your pregnancy care team

  1. What did the scan show about one or both feet?
  2. Does this appear to be an isolated finding?
  3. Are you recommending further assessment, and what could it help us understand?
  4. Can we speak to a Ponseti care team before birth, and who should we contact afterward?
